Pick a Fight You Can’t Skip

Personal Development — August 2026 — 12 Weeks to Hyrox Tampa

Long before marathons, ultramarathons, or an Ironman were ever on my radar, I crossed a much smaller finish line: my first 5k. I wasn’t a runner. Training for it pushed me in a way nothing else in my life was pushing me at the time.

It wasn’t fast, and it wasn’t pretty. But crossing that finish line was a small win, and every bigger win I’ve stacked since — the firm, the coaching business, all of it — was built on top of that one.

“The prize never goes to the fastest guy. It goes to the guy who slows down the least.”
— Rich Roll, Finding Ultra

The Fastest Way to Level Up Your Life

Here’s what I believe after years of testing it on myself: taking on a physical challenge — training for a race, a competition, anything with a date and a scoreboard — might be the fastest way to level up your entire life. It’s rarely about the finish line itself.

It gives your day structure. You sleep better. Your eating habits improve without you forcing them. Your body changes. And almost every other area of your life — work, relationships, discipline you thought you didn’t have — starts quietly falling into place too, because you’ve proven to yourself you can commit to something hard and see it through.

That’s not a coincidence, and it’s not just motivational talk. It’s the same principle I use with every client I coach: you don’t build discipline by thinking about it. You build it by picking a target, committing to a plan, and measuring the work.

My Next Challenge: Hyrox Tampa

I’m 12 weeks out from Hyrox Tampa, and official training starts this week. Here’s what that looks like on my calendar:

  • Monday — Heavy lift with my personal trainer
  • Tuesday — Interval run
  • Wednesday — Hyrox-specific training
  • Thursday — Zone 2 run and lift
  • Friday — Hyrox circuit
  • Saturday — Long run
  • Sunday — Rest and recovery

Notice what’s missing: guesswork. There’s a plan for every day, and the plan has a purpose.

How I’ll Measure Progress

You can’t manage what you don’t measure, and training is no different. Every couple of weeks I’ll repeat the same benchmark workout: 1000m run, 1000m SkiErg, 1000m run, 50 wall balls, 1000m run. I’ll record total time, average heart rate, and RPE (rate of perceived effort) each time.

Same test, same distances, weeks apart. If the time drops and the effort at that same pace gets easier, I’ll know the training is working — no guessing required.

This is the exact framework I use in coaching, too. Pick a benchmark. Repeat it on a schedule. Let the numbers, not your feelings on a given Tuesday, tell you whether you’re actually improving.

Two Resources If You Want a Push

If Hyrox, or any endurance-style competition, is on your radar, spend ten minutes with Nick Bare’s hybrid training breakdown. Nick is an Army veteran and entrepreneur who built his company, Bare Performance Nutrition, out of his college dorm room into a $100 million company, and now trains as a hybrid athlete blending running, lifting, and Hyrox. If you want to get a flavor of Hyrox prep, check out the video.

The book that first put me on this path was Finding Ultra by Rich Roll. Rich was a corporate entertainment attorney — sound familiar? — who spent years managing the stress of the job with alcohol before hitting rock bottom in his late thirties. He got sober, and instead of settling into a quieter version of himself, he rebuilt his body and his identity from the ground up, eventually completing Ultraman triathlons and earning a spot on Men’s Fitness’s “25 Fittest Men in the World.” If you’ve ever used the job, the stress, or a bad habit as the reason you can’t take on something physically hard, this book is the permission slip you didn’t know you needed. You can grab it here: Finding Ultra on Amazon.

What’s your physical challenge? You don’t need to sign up for Hyrox. You need one target uncomfortable enough to give your week structure — and if you’re serious about applying that same discipline to your business, that’s exactly what we build together in coaching.

What This Looks Like in a Coaching Relationship

The way I train is the way I coach: pick a target, build a repeatable plan around it, and measure the work instead of the feelings. I work with law firm owners and business founders who want that same structure applied to their business — not motivation for motivation’s sake, but a system that actually moves the number.

Here’s what we build together:

  • A clear 90-day target instead of a vague “grow the firm” goal
  • A weekly plan built around the 2-3 activities that actually move that target
  • A benchmark you repeat on a schedule, so progress is measured, not assumed
  • Accountability sessions that keep you honest about the work, not just the outcome

The result isn’t just a bigger firm. It’s a leader who’s back in motion, on the business side and everywhere else.

Pick Your Challenge. Then Let’s Build the Plan.

You don’t need the perfect plan this week. You need one challenge — physical, professional, or both — worth committing to. Pick it. The momentum, and the success that follows it, will take care of itself.

If you read this and felt a pull, if something here named a gap you’ve been aware of but haven’t addressed, that’s worth paying attention to.

I work with a small group of law firm owners and founders at a time. I don’t take on volume — I take on people who are serious about building something significant and are willing to do the daily work to get there.

If that’s you, let’s talk. The conversation is free. The clarity you walk away with is not.

30 minutes. No pitch. Just clarity on where you are, where you want to go, and whether working together makes sense.
